Stratum music

An independent label for songs that wouldn't otherwise exist.

What this is

A label built around a question.

Stratum Music is an independent label and creative project built around a question: what does it look like when someone has stories worth telling but isn't a traditional songwriter or musician?

The catalog spans multiple artist projects, each with its own voice — some personal, some narrative, some still taking shape. What ties them together is a process. Stories and source material come from real human experience or imagined fictional worlds. AI tools handle the lyrics, music, and vocals. The human in the loop directs, curates, and decides what gets released.

Releases are distributed to streaming services under each project's own artist name. We're open about how the work is made — AI isn't hidden, and it isn't the point. The point is that songs which would otherwise stay in someone's head can now reach the people they were written for.

The process

How a song gets made.

Source

It starts with material — a person's actual life, a remembered conversation, an old grief, a small joke. Sometimes it starts somewhere else entirely: an imagined character in an invented world, a fragment of a story that needs a voice to carry it. Either way, there is a human deciding what is worth turning into a song.

Tools

AI handles the lyrics, the music, and the vocals. That part is straightforward. The tools have gotten very good at the craft of arrangement — at finding a melody that carries an idea, at putting words on a beat. They are not very good at deciding which idea is worth carrying. That part stays with us.

Direction

The human in the loop directs and curates: choosing what the song is about, listening to dozens of attempts, throwing most of them away, pulling at threads, asking for another take. Most of the work is in the throwing-away. A release is what's left when nothing else feels truer.

Disclosure

We say all of this out loud because it matters how the work is made. AI is not hidden in the credits, and it is not the headline either. The headline is the song, and whether a song reaches the person it was written for. That is the whole job.
